Chronic illness and work pt.1

I've had a few requests to write what it is like / how to work with a chronic pain or illness and I have always been a little weary about writing about work because I am worried I will word something wrong and it will affect my personal/working life. If that makes any sense, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

Before I got seriously ill and diagnosed I worked in a day nursery with two year olds, I adored my job and believe that it is the most rewarding job I could find. October last year (after being off sick for months) I had to leave my job as there was no way I could travel across town and work the 9 hour days in such a physically demanding job with my Fibromyalgia.

I was heartbroken to the point that I was mourning my old job, I missed it and the children I worked with so much. I was certain that was it I would never work in that profession again because of the restrictions of my body and illness.

I'll be honest now, I spent months ignoring everything and decided that it was impossible for me to ever work again because of my chronic illness. In February this year I had a bit of a personal reality slap and I think after a year in the house day in day out cabin fever made me realise that I should try and attempt to get some kind of work to keep myself occupied because I was going crazy in the same four walls.

I sent out my CV with a cover letter saying I was looking for bank staff or cover work to a few local nurseries, community centers, primary schools and anywhere else that was based in childcare.

From that I now technically have two job's. I work in a nursery covering shift's and I also work in a primary school as a Lunch time supervisor again covering shifts when people are off sick/on holiday etc.

Getting back into work in my own opinion has given me my spark back and I feel more like a person again and not just a broken shell , it has really helped me mentally now as I feel like I kind of have a purpose again and things to look forward too.

I am going to write another post about actually working with a chronic illness/pain as I didn't realise how long this post would be, whoop's lot's of rambling !

Please below leave any topic's or questions about working with Fibromyalgia or about how I deal with work that you would like me to answer in the next post

Take care, Jayne xx

Weekly summary - FMSphotoaday week 3

                                             1. You: after completing the race for life on Sunday
2. Something funny : Mum's birthday card
3. 11 o'clock : morning cup of tea and reading
4. kitchen : making breakfast
5. texture : Favourite record (Dave Hause - C'mon kid)
6. from above : Moving my brother into his new flat
7. family : just before leaving my brother's flat

Another busy week for me. After two day's trying to recover from the Race for life on Sunday. I got offered another shift at the nursery, so now I am working two mornings a week. It was my mum's birthday on Tuesday and we all spent the night in with a lovely meal. Then the rest of the week and the weekend was spent with my brother moving him into his new flat and getting his organised. It was a great weekend with lot's of meals out, walks round Birmingham and lot's of time spent with the family. It felt weird leaving him at his flat but he's starting a new job and this is a great opportunity.

Hope you all had a great week and I hope to get another blog post up in the week.

Take care, Jayne xx

Weekly summary - FMSphotoaday week 2

  1. On my table - a dinner at the boyfriends of home made fish cakes and noodles
  2. After dark - snuggled in bed reading on my kindle
  3. Environment - one of my favorite photo's of when my boyfriend took me to the lake district for my birthday last year.
  4. Transport - first trip out in my brothers car with him to buy some bit's for his flat
  5. Bright - it's been a sunny week and everything has just seemed that little bit brighter
  6. An animal - if you don't know already Hippo's are my favorite animals.
  7. From down low - I couldn't get a photo from right below the start line for the Race For Life but this was close enough.
This week has been the busiest in a long time. I have worked everyday, granted only a hour or two some day's but for someone who thought they'd never be able to work again due to chronic pain it is a BIG deal!

Talking of big deal's if you hadn't seen on Facebook/twitter etc I did the Race for Life on Sunday 9th and I jogged most of it without my walking stick, that's 5km (3.5miles roughly) and all in 41minutes! I am so happy  and proud of myself as this was a big thing for me. I am so happy I achieved it and much faster than I thought I would. I am paying for it now, my body is so sore and I've been in bed most of the day after.

me and my Mum once we crossed the finish line!
All in all last week has been so good even if it's been really busy for me. hopefully this week coming will be as good, a week full of work and then at the weekend moving my brother into his flat!

Weekly Summary. Start of June's photoaday

So I only have two photo's for June so far but I thought I'd share them now rather than having 9 next week .

  1.  B is for ... Barbeque. Not our first barbeque of the year but nothing beats sitting out in the garden cooking and with the family.
  2. A moment : Sunday is usually my rest day but today is an extra rest day. Nothing for me but sitting down with my feet up. In the sun with a good book, minus the pain I can't complain too much.
This week has been a blur, with my brother being offered a job in a different city we have been helping him out preparing for him to move out, get a car etc. But my morning shift at the nursery at the beginning of week turned into a full day when someone called in sick. I was really nervous because it's the first full day I've worked since before I got sick. But it was really good and I enjoyed it so much. I am so happy to be back doing a job I love. The next few day's I was recovering and trying to rest my body but I am rubbish at that. Had a day shopping with the family and a cheeky trip to Nando's which is always good. Then on Friday I baby sat my Boyfriends niece and nephew with him, so it was a day in the park enjoying the sun with them.
And that's the week over and I am left smiling but my body is really feeling it at the moment which sucks.

Had to sneak  this photo in here some where <3 br="">

This time next week I will be doing the Race for life, and it would mean the world to me if you could take a moment and spare a few pennies for such a fantastic cause.MY SPONSOR PAGE IS HERE and although I have reached my target every penny counts. It is going to be a tough walk for me and a huge challenge for my body but I am determined to look past my illness and help raise money and awareness for cancer research.

Take care, Jayne xx

End of May photo a day

  1. Can't live without : Music it's one thing I am passionate  about and will constantly have music playing I believe it can help any situation and bring back memories and feelings from any occasion.

  3. Kiss : cute puppy and lipstick doesn't need anymore words !
  4. Tool : I guess make up brushes count as tools, the best way to fool the world into thinking I'm not sick!
I thought I'd round up May's photo a day before starting June's tomorrow. My weekly update will be up as usual on Sunday with the start of June's photo's

Weekly Summary - FMSphotoaday week 4

  1. Light - My SAD Lamp : Although it's apparently Spring I still feel the need to have this lamp on nearly all the time to keep my mood and vitamin D levels topped up
  2. I care about this : My dog's, by now you'll probably know that these two play a huge part in my life and look after me on my worst days.
  3. Change : Finally getting round to organizing all the pennies I've collected over the years.
  4. Pj's - the cutest nightwear ever (well in my opinion)
  5. Go - Away cold! I've been battling with a cold all week and have been drinking these like there's no tomorrow
  6. Us : My grandparents came round and brought us all fish and chips, it was a lovely warm day so we had lunch in the garden together
  7.  Fave thing to do on Sunday : Sunbathing and having a picnic by the water. Was such a lovely afternoon with the Boyfriend relaxing and making the most of the sun.
This week I had an early morning shift at the nursery at the beginning of the week which despite having to get up a 6:45am I loved it. It was only a 4 hour shift but that is more than enough for my body. Plus I've been asked to do that shift weekly now for the next month and a bit! My week from then on went down hill health wise I've picked up a cold/flu from somewhere. This means me and my bed have become best friends this week. In case you missed it I wrote a blog post mid week with tip's on how to fight off a cold/flu. Although I still managed to go and watch my boyfriend perform in a production of Treasure Island which was fantastic! Also I had another lunch time shift at the local school but I swear every time I cover it is raining I'm some kind of jinx I think. Then yesterday spend time with the family and my grandparents which was really nice , they came round to watch the rugby though by the time it was kickoff I was back in bed trying to recover! Hopefully this cold will get the idea soon and will go away!

Hope you all had good weeks and I can't believe this month is nearly over!

Fighting against cold/flu with chronic pain

So I woke up this morning with a blocked up nose, headache, and my throat feeling like it had been cut by a thousand knives, all on top of worsened Fibromyalgia aches and pains and fatigue. Every person with a chronic illness or pain knows that having a 'normal' person illness makes everything flare up and is a hundred times worse than anyone getting it.

I thought I would do a short post showing how I try and deal and fight against my body when I am faced against the flu or my just when my immune system failing me.

  • First off I make sure my Vitamin C intake is topped up to give my immune system that little boost.
  • This MSM with Glucosamine creme is amazing for aching muscles and joints. I have been struggling with aching in my upper arms whist I have this illness and it helps so much to ease the pain. I use this creme all the time with general Fibromyalgia pain so it's a good investment.
  • Olbas oil is a must for stuffy, blocked up noses, it always helps to clear my sinuses out and it's a bonus that I like the scent too (not that I can smell it at the moment!)
  • This throat spray is my go too for sore throats. My Fibromyalgia was caused by a extreme throat virus so I have tested and used most throat sweets and treatments and this spray has to be the most effective . It simply just numbs the throat and eases the pain. Makes eating a lot easier.
  • Lip balm is also a must because when I am ill no matter how much I drink my lips crack and split so having a lip balm on hand is a life saver.
  • And last is an antibacterial hand gel , it makes it so much easier when you are stuck in bed and blowing your nose and coughing all the time because there is no way I have the energy in me to get up to the bathroom to wash my hands.

Next is two drinks that I am constantly drinking when I am ill in order to keep myself hydrated and help the recovery a little bit
  • Lemsip or the cheaper verson, I am lucky and I can take this along side my regular Fibromyalgia medication (it's best to check with your GP first). I have not found a cold/flu medication that works as well as these. I think you can take them every four hours and unliek most people I actually like the taste so it's not too bad.
  • Green tea is a regular drink when I've got a cold/flu, but when I am ill I have green tea strong with some honey to help soothe my throat too.
Also I recommend a lot of bed rest, drinking lots of fluids and just taking it easy, and going to your doctor if the illness lasts longer than 5 days in case it is a virus that needs medication.
If you have any tips leave them below as I am desperate to get rid of this cold/flu :-)

Take care, Jayne xx

Weekly Summary : FMSphotoaday Week 3

  1.  Sunrise/sunset : Monday was a horrible dull cloudy day but I was lucky in the evening to catch a little bit of colour in the sky
  2. Need : I am desperate for some warmer weather and I need all this rain and clouds to go away and give us a decent spring
  3. 7 O'clock - I missed 7 am because I was asleep but spent this evening watching Les Miserable's with the boyfriend and celebrating his new job with Pizza
  4. Mail Box - This book arrived today and I very excited to read it as I have heard some great things about it
  5. Season - another example of the lack of spring weather even though all the blossom is out and flowers are the only proof that is meant to be spring.
  6. Want - Not my photo but I really want to get back into doing yoga, it has so many benefits but I am lacking motivation
  7. My favorite View - Brighton Pier , it's been a while since I've been here but I have so much love for the town and hope to visit again soon.
This week again has a bit boring, I did another few shifts at the local primary school as a Lunch time assistant which was nice and always hear some strange things little kids say! I am fighting against really bad fatigue this week and I am hoping it passes soon or I will be spending all my life asleep!
I have spent a lot of time with Ben (the boyfriend) this week and as always that makes me really happy. In case you hadn't already guessed I am longing for warmer more spring time weather, my mood and body really doesn't deal with the dull rainy days.

Hopefully this next week will be batter and I have a few things lined up to keep me active and I am starting to enjoy getting out the house more :-)

Weekly Summary : FMSphotoaday Week 2

This post was meant to go up yesterday but I was so busy with Fibromyalgia awareness day that I just didn't have the time. I hope you all had a brilliant awareness day and I think we did ourselves proud and well done to everyone!

a lot of purple was worn yesterday !

Now onto last weeks photo's and about my week.

  1. Broken - Headphones breaking is the bane of my life, I can't afford to splurge out on a good pair at the moment so I keep buying cheap ones but they keep breaking cause I use them so much
  2. Something begining with F - Freckles , since the sun has been out a little bit more my freckles are starting to come out again and I love them.
  3. Shape - I brought this star from Lincoln christmas market and it smells of orange and cinnamon and all things christmasy, nice to keep by my bed to make it cosy.
  4.  A Snack - With my medication my appetite is through the roof and I find myself constantly snacking and reaching for these.
  5. I missed this next day which was star's whoops.
  6. A smile - this photo was taken just after I had a bath and was all relaxed and ready for bed (it's a good job the webcam does justice to my tired face!)
  7. Mother - it was mothers day in America on Sunday and even though it wasn't here in the UK I will never pass up a chance to show off my amazing mother
Last week has been a bit hit and miss we had some beautiful weather at the beginning of the week which lifted my mood a lot and I was pretty happy just getting through the days. Towards the end of the week I did a couple of shifts at the local primary school  as a lunch time supervisor which was nice, it makes a change to being stuck at home, and it's a little bit more money to keep me going. At the weekend I went to the Northampton Scouts gangshow with my Boyfriend which was fantastic and again it was nice to be out the house enjoying myself (thank you body for playing nice for a few hours) and then before I know it, it was Fibromyalgia awareness day, which although I wasn't well enough to get out there and raise awareness I spent a lot of time on my facebook support page, twitter, on here and on tumblr spreading the word and telling people what it's really like to live with Fibromyalgia.

My fibromyalgia : personal symptoms

Today is Fibromyalgia awareness day and as requested I am going to list and write a little about my personal symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

As Fibromyalgia varies from person to person and there are a lot of symptoms (up to 60) that you could have, if you think that you have Fibromyalgia please see a doctor and see what symptoms you have and get a medical professionals opinion.

My Symptoms:

I will try and group some symptoms together or we will be here all day :-)

Physical symptoms:
  • I have 12-14 out of 18 active trigger/tender points
  • Knees - I have restless leg syndrome and my knees cause me some of the worst pain, my knees swell up , ache, stabbing and shooting pain and can give way when I stand for too long. This is the main reason I walk with a walking stick
  • Back and Shoulders are nearly as bad as the knee's. I get shooting pains and aches in my lower back and I have spasms in my shoulders and they will give way too.
  • The rest of my joints all ache, swell, and spasm on a regular basis
  • I have sensitive skin, it gets really dry and I have Eczema patches all over my body.
  • Flu like symptoms and chronic sore throat , imagine waking up every day feeling like you have the flu or a really bad cold. that is how I feel every single day.
  • I have crippling fatigue, days where I have no energy to even stand, I end up having to take 2 or 3 hour naps even when I've had a full night's sleep before
  • I have sensitivity to weather, smell, noise light and heat. If any of these are too strong or loud it makes me feel really ill and can give me headaches and migraines.
  • My Period pains are crippling, When it is my time of the month I am usually bed bound most of the time because I feel faint and the cramps are 10 times worse than a normal person will feel.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, my body does not process certain foods and my insides are very sensitive.
Psychological symptoms:
  • Sleep disruptions. I suffer from insomnia (worsened during a flare up) and my body is incapable of deep sleep meaning I can not access REM sleep. As a result I never feel like I have had a restful sleep. Imagine facing everyday feeling like you've had 2 hours sleep when really you've actually had 10!
  • Anxiety and depression - I've grouped these together because it is always hard to tell if they are a symptom or if they are caused by of all the other symptoms. Either way I suffer from both of these and they are very disabling they stop me from going out and enjoying things in life that I should making me very isolated from everyone else.
  • Cognitive defects/memory loss known as fibro or brain fog. Basically this means I can forget what I did yesterday or 5 minutes ago. My brain feels heavy and foggy meaning I can not think straight or even string sentences together (can you tell I'm suffering with it right now ha)
I think I have got the majority of my symptoms down in this list, I have probably missed one or two but I hope this gives you a good idea of what I am going through.

Please leave me some comment's below :-)

Weekly summary : FMSphotoaday week one

If you saw this post or you follow my Facebook Page, Twitter or Tumblr you will have seen that I am doing the Fat Mum Slim photo a day for the entirety of May. I thought I would do a sum up every Sunday of the weeks photo's on here :-)

  1. I brought this - Hugh Laurie's new album which was released this week and has pretty much been on repeat since it arrived too
  2. Morning ritual - I always start the day with a cup of tea, my medication, a filling breakfast and also take some time to read through a magazine or book
  3. This is really good - I took my brother to see Iron Man 3 this week and it was really good, if you've seen the other two you should definitely go, you will not be disappointed!
  4. In my cup - I pretty much only ever drink tea throughout the day and at the moment I am loving this citrus fruit tea, it's really refreshing and perfect for spring time.
  5. Paper - Recently I have been getting back into buying magazines and spending time reading them. It's a nice treat to relax away from things and take some time out to read.
This week has been a bit of a blur , with working and being busy weeks before I felt a bit lost because of not really having anything to do. I can tell now that doing this challenge is going to help to keep me on the ball a bit and challenge me to look around more and also help me to blog at least weekly (hopefully more).

HAWMC Day 23 – Technology

“I wish this gizmo could track my condition!” Write about which device, application, program, etc. you wish helped to track your health.

I've written something like this before and I spoke about how I would love there to be a game simular to the Wii Fit to help us chronically ill exercise, one that would accomidate to us and our body issues. You can check out that post here .

Write about how your life would change if there was no social media. Today’s post was recommended by Christina of www.stickwithitsugar.com

Some day's I wish that some social networking didn't exist because of negative words and bitchy things said on them and also all the grief you can get from them. This thought has changed a lot since becoming ill, I got rid of a lot of people who were making it a negative experience. Since then I find myself falling more in love with social media and networks by the day. There is so a fantastic advantage to it all, the communitiy of people you can build and the endless oportunities to connect with so many different types of people.

Without Social media and networking I would feel lost, of course I could survive and it wouldn't be the end of the word but to start with I would feel a bit lost because it is second nature to me now. All in all I think without social media I would feel very alone and isolated from the world because it is what makes me connect with others in the same position as I am.

HAWMC Day 22 - Day to Day, Couldn't live without you

Write about the things you couldn’t live without – list 10 things you need or love most.
  • My Dogs - puppy therapy is one of the best things and my dogs are so loyal it's hard to find a day when they are not by my side making sure I'm okay. They always make me smile and I would be truly lost without them
  • Music - I am always without a doubt listening to music and I am a true believer in the fact that music can change your mood, it can make you happy, it can make you sad , it brings back memories you thought you'd forgotten. My passion for music is one of my biggest passions.
  • My medication - It's probably an obvious one, but since I got my medication combination sorted nearly a year ago I got my life back, of course I still have flare up's and bad days. But overall I believe that my medication has given me so much back and it gives me the ability to live and not just merely survive.
  •  Make up - okay I could live without Make up , but there is something about doing my make up and it making me feel a lot better about myself. On the day's I do my make up I feel that little bit more normal, I finally understand it being a bit of a mask to hide behind, though mine just hides my illness and bring out the true me.
  • Social networking - Before becoming ill I never realised the true advantage of social networking, connecting and finding other people who are going through the same as you. Like most people when I was first diagnosed with a chronic illness I was scared and felt so isolated from the world, but once I branched out and looked online I found the most amazing communities of people in the same position as me. Thank you all for being there and being so incredible.
Moving onto people because I can't think of many more material items
  •   My Parent's - I really don't know where I would be without my Mum and Dad. They have been so supporting throughout everything, even when they give me that 'tough love'. They always have the best intentions for me and they are truly amazing and the best parent's I could ask for.
  • My Brother - Although he wasn't around when I first got diagnosed he always knows how to make me smile with his stupid sense of humor and he looks after me, and always makes sure I'm okay.
  • My Boyfriend - He knew me before I got really ill and I can't imagine what it was like to see the woman he loves go from healthy to having to care for me and look after me. I don't know how he does it, he is always there for me weather it's getting a drink for me or taking me to the emergency room and sticking by my side. I could never show him enough how thankful I am for him.
  • The Friends who stuck around - although I could count this list on one hand I am so grateful to those few who are still there for me. I don't see any of them as much as I would like too but we text and chat on a regular basis and I would be lost without having them to rant and ramble too during my bad days, they know who they are :-)
What are things that your are thankful for / can't live without?

HAWMC Day 20

Today I had a rough day so I don't really feel up to writing about my burnout's and how I deal with them, so today's post is going to be a list of all the things I am thankful for or that have made me smile recently.

  1. Quiet evenings in
  2. Cups of tea
  3. Cuddles with my dogs
  4. Buying the vinyl record I have been lusting after
  5. Singing at the top of my voice
  6. My boyfriend
  7. Peanut butter on toast
  8. Strong Coffee
  9. Getting over my burnout today
  10. Sunshine finally arriving
Just a short post, but I needed to take sometime to look at the positive things.
Take care, Jayne xx

HAWMC Day 19 – Vintage

Post a vintage photo of yourself, with a captain about the photo and where you were in terms of your health condition.

First I want to apologise for not being around most of this week, either I have been uninspired by the prompts or the main reason is that I have been at work! I have had the busiest week in a long time and I've worked 3 shifts and sorted out paperwork for another job too.

Since I have only been ill for a couple of years I don't have many 'vintage' photo's but I thought I'd find out some photo's of me with my cane covering all the time I have had Fibromyalgia. So here is a handful of photo's of me since I've had my stick and Fibromyalgia.

HAWMC Day 15 – Sharing

Comment! Pick someone else’s blog post and write a comment to them. Write that comment as your post for today and link back to them to let them know you were inspired.

Sorry for no appearance yesterday I am fighting a really bad fatigue, nausea and headache flare up which personally at the moment I think is more disabling than a pain flare up as I am unable to think straight let alone get up and move. So I've actually spent the last 3-4 day's in bed unable to do anything.

Anyway enough about me, now I've got to talk about a woman who has been inspiring me so much recently despite her being in really bad pain at the moment she has been there for her community and her last two video's have been truly amazing and have really hit home with me.

Of course I am talking about Kelly Fricke (@sickgirldiary), this is her lastest video and my comment that was posted up this morning. A raw view of life with pain with the beautiful message and reminder that it is okay, to not be okay.

And I'll leave you with one of her newst video's which has really spoken to me 'Stop comparing yourself to others', She really is an inspiration!
